Richard Schwebel Family Award
Camp One Step is proud to share a long and meaningful partnership with The Schwebel Family and The Jeffrey Schwebel Foundation, which has enthusiastically supported our mission to send children to camp for more than 18 years. The Jeffrey Schwebel Foundation was created in 2001 by Scott Schwebel and Monica Schwebel Orr, with the support of their family, to honor the memory of their brother Jeffrey, a childhood cancer survivor and former One Step camper and counselor. Jeffrey first attended camp in 1979 at the age of twelve, where he was able to continue to pursue his love of sailing thanks to the camp’s programs.
Since it’s inception, The Jeffrey Schwebel Foundation has generously donated more than a half million dollars to Camp One Step. Jeffrey's father, Richard Schwebel, served as a distinguished Board Member for our organization. Following Dick’s death in 2014, our organization created the Richard Schwebel Family Award to honor his life and this family’s long-standing philanthropic association with Camp One Step. The 2020 recipient of The Richard Schwebel Family Award is KOA Care Camps.
KOA Care Camps
In 1984, the KOA (Kampgrounds of America) Owners Association created KOA Care Camps to provide opportunities for kids with cancer to attend oncology camps, where they can escape from their pain and suffering, and enjoy the healing and freedom that comes from attending specialized camps where they can just be themselves. KOA Care Camps raises money annually to support camps located across the country, including Camp One Step. KOA Care Camps currently supports 139 children’s oncology camps across North America, and last year reached a new milestone of $16 million in total donations since their inception. In total, they have generously donated $300,000 to Camp One Step since 2000, in support of our annual Summer Camp. Congratulations to this year's winner of the Richard Schwebel Family Award, KOA Care Camps.
Hospira Foundation Award
The Hospira Foundation was the philanthropic affiliate of Hospira, Inc., which was acquired by Pfizer Inc. in September 2015. As an Illinois corporation, Hospira was looking to partner with charities based in Chicago and whose missions are centered around pediatric cancer. In 2015, our organization was awarded a grant from the Hospira Foundation to help sponsor Chicago area children to attend our Summer Camp and Winter Camp programs through 2025. At that time, we established the Hospira Foundation Award, which recognizes businesses or individuals who have provided outstanding support to our organization. The 2020 recipient of the Hospira Foundation Award is Woodside Ranch.
Woodside Ranch, located in Mauston, Wisconsin, has always based it's roots on being a family and in serving others, and their current owner Damon Zumwalt (Uncle Z) has carried on that tradition. Their staff works together like a family to help make amazing memories for our campers. For more than 10 years, Camp One Step has partnered with Woodside Ranch to host our Dude Ranch Program at their beautiful location, serving children ages 11-16 years old. The wonderful wranglers and staff at the ranch work each year with our campers, adapting activities such as riding horses, horsemanship classes, hayrides, and providing other programs along the way. Our campers and volunteers look forward to spending time at Woodside Ranch every year, developing new skills, trying new activities, working with animals, and making new friends. Congratulations to this year's winner of the Hospira Foundation Award, Woodside Ranch.
